Planning for a 21st-century airport
Planning for transport options and road infrastructure is underway to ensure Western Sydney Airport is well connected to Sydney’s road and transport networks.
Connecting the airport to the region by rail is a key commitment of the Western Sydney City Deal, a partnership agreement between the Australian Government, NSW Government and eight local governments to create the ‘Western Parkland City’ through the delivery of rail, jobs and community infrastructure for the people of Western Sydney.
Broader strategic planning for transport in Western Sydney under the City Deal aims to make local jobs accessible in 30 minutes and to enable more work trips by public and active transport. This includes delivering rail for the Western Parkland City and establishing rapid bus services from Penrith, Liverpool and Campbelltown to the airport before it opens in 2026, and to the new Western Sydney Aerotropolis.
The Australian and NSW governments have jointly committed to delivering the first stage of the North South Rail Link under the City Deal. The North South Rail Link will connect St Marys to the airport and the Aerotropolis with a metro-style rail service. Both governments have an objective to have the rail line connected by the airport’s opening in 2026.
The Australian Government is preparing for a rail line within the Western Sydney Airport site by safeguarding space for future stations and preserving a rail corridor through the site. This corridor can cater for up to two independent rail lines (four lines of track).
The airport is also supported by the Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan, which outlines major road infrastructure projects to keep traffic moving in Sydney’s west.
